Year-ender Excursion: Money Museum and Lombok Community in Utrecht

12 June, 2008: It was raining hard that day but it did not prevented us from joining our excursion to the Royal Dutch Mint, popularly known as the Money Museum and to a nearby multi-cultural community Lombok.

Inside the museum, we had a guided tour around the rooms where you can read the (dutch) money's history and see the valuable memorabilia. Each of us got a free swipe card, which you can use to have your face in design-your-own money or in a newspaper and print there. You can also play vendo games using the card if you do not want the previous two. It's a bit of a pity that we're not allowed to take photos inside otherwise; I can show here how the Euro coins are made. Looking through the partitioned glasses, we saw how those nickels are put in a mixer and end up rolled in their 10's and 20's and so on. Yes, they are making the coins there at the museum, but the bills are made someplace else, in Haarlem. Sometimes, they also received orders to make other country's coins, like Af...

From Consie to Consita, Conchitina, Conchita, Consuelo, Conching, Conchi and Concha (and mind you, I was once called Consti!). Aside from that, the way they spell it also varies from my original Consie to Consi, Conci, Concie and Consy. Funny :)
Consie is not my original nickname.
Cashier experience

Since April this year, I have been working at a local warehouse in the town center. In the bigger one 'coz they have two branches downtown. It's bikeable for 15-20 minutes from our place. This warehouse is similar to our own Uniwide Sales (the smaller one along Edsa-Kamuning). Only differences are the cafe, restaurant and products ---- they are home brands, except for the over the counter drinks. HEMA has 344 warehouses in the country. They've got branches in Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany too. They merged in 1999 with the other big retail companies.

I have a 10-hour per week contract. This summer I will work there for a max of 35 hours per week. There are different sections/departments in the warehouse. I am stationed in the food and wine section. We have meat area, bakery, cafe, and dry foods. We also have central pay-counters. Aside from selling, we also do the packing of breads, meats (cold cuts) and cheese. The bakery and cafe have their own counters. Except in the meat ...

State Exam

I am so ecstatic and proud of myself.

I passed my Dutch National Exam*. Every foreigner living in this country who is
18 years and above, wanting to have a diploma or certificate showing that he or she has a relatively enough control of the language in relation to pursuing a study or having a job, can take this exam.

Because of the amended law on integration, this National exam is now being held every week. It consists of 4 parts: listening, speaking, writing and reading. It also has two programs: 1 and 2 which differ in the kind of study and work one would like to pursue and have. Program 1 is for vocational-technical courses and jobs while program 2 is for applied sciences/university courses and jobs.

I have never been so tensed and nervous with regards to exams before. With these exams, my heart beated faster than I could remember. I was sweaty and cold and almost failed to say a word during the speaking exam.

Now after all that, I passed it to my satisfaction and amazement. I...

Photo Story: Independence Day Picnic in the NL

A yearly Filipino picnic organized by the 'coalition' (including the Phil Embassy) to commemorate Filipino independence from Spanish colonizers. Since this is from the point of view of the embassy, this activity is more aimed to gather Filipinos all over (the) Netherlands, not to commemorate the lessons and triumphs of the 1896 revolution, but just to have a yearly and nationwide gathering and Independence day is a good excuse.

However, for the most of Filipinos here, ID is also their good excuse to take a rest from their busy schedules, a place where they can both relax, buy mangoes and other Filipino products, eat Filipino foods with their kababayans and non-kababayans, catch up with their friends and families and meet new acquaintances.

This is a family outing, a get together, an R & R expedition. They don't mind bringing big tents, barbecue grills and all other paraphernalia. Doing the labor-intensive preparation of food is no big deal in exchange for a one-day-in-a -year c...

Visiting Maastricht

Four pinaytjes (maliliit na mga pinay) enjoyed being tourists in the pretty town of Maastricht in the Netherlands. Maastricht is where the river Maas is which passes two countries (NL and Belgium). It is also a rain river that during rainy season, it overflows. If not for the free train ticket for two of Carol, we would not actually been there. Sounds like this funny paradox: the city or the country (in NL's case) you live in is the least city you tour around or not your priority. If people want to have the tourist feel, they would go somewhere else even just over the border, just to say they're out of the Netherlands when in fact they have not seen (and been to) yet half of the country.
my second dutch written poem

één van de opdrachten uit het Code boek die ik moest maken.(One of the exercises from the Code book which I had to make. Code is the name of the book we are using to study dutch. Poem's translation will follow. It is about one's longing to go back to his/her motherland)
--------
Buiten kijken

Stuurt me terug naar mijn moederland

History class

History is one of my 12 subjects in school. I'm doing at the moment the Dutch General Secondary Adult Education (VAVO: Voortgezet Algemeen Volwassen Onderwijs).

This history subject or rather the history book that we're required to buy and read tackles the European, the Netherlands and (to my surprise) the US history. I don't know why US history was included in the book. No reasons mentioned in the introduction.

During my Philippine school days, I liked history a lot. I even liked it more when I discovered Historical Materialism. Day to day happenings in the world made more sense. However, I am poor when it comes to remembering dates and names. Perhaps I need more training in that area.

I was excited when I learned that I'll be having history class. I could learn something new about the European History from the Dutch point of view. Despite the fact that our history class was the last subject on a friday(!), it seemed not so boring to me. But I was completely wrong!

It wa...

Nightmare

I had a nightmare a week ago. I woke up crying. It was about Juliet. I dreamt that she died.

When I went to bed that night, I knew that I'll have a nightmare about her because it was in the same day, in the afternoon, that I learned that she was abducted by the military. But I only knew the whole account of her abduction days after.

I immediately called two of my former colleagues in (former) Gabriela-Youth, who are with and still active in GABRIELA to inquire what really happened. It was past 5 in the afternoon here in the Netherlands and with a 6 hour time difference, they might be hitting the bed, but still I tried, knowing that they are nocturnal. However, I was not successful.

Since I did not succeed in calling them, I just relied on the news in the net. One news was forwarded to me via www.inq7.net. GABRIELA and other organizations and her parents picketed the Department of National Defense and had a dialogue with the chief officer. As it was expected, the DND chief ...

How about the issue of surfacing the person disappeared? Bullshit.

NB:
GABRIELA - largest national Filipino women's alliance in the Philippines
KARAPATAN - alliance of human rights organizations in the Philippines
DND - Department of National Defense

Harry Potter

3 days after the release of the most awaited final sequel of Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, we came back to the Netherlands from a 10-day vacation in Ardennen, Belgium.

I reserved a copy 2 weeks before I left to make sure I can get one. Thanks to my book coupon (boekenbon) that even if I run out of money while on vacation, I can surely pay it :) (thanks a lot, Henny!).

I was in Brugge, Belgium when Harry Potters' final chapter greeted the public. Out of curiousity, I went to a bookstore to see it. I was really tempted to buy it if not for the price! It's so expensive. 25 euros?...Nope.

Back in Utrecht, I could not immediately go to a bookstore because I need to attend first the SONA rally. I had to wait but luckily, the rally venue was just a few meters away from the bookstore where I did my reservation. Just 30 minutes before the store closed, I quickly stepped inside. I was a bit worried that my reservation was already cancelled because I "thoug...

Pineapple upside down cake

May 10, 2007

"Nini and Andi Dish it Up" ang pamagat ng programa.
